FAQ

Wait, there’s two of you?

Gene

Yes. Hi. Say Hello, Harper.

Harper

[She’s standing on my throat btw. If you even care.] hi

How do we know who’s talking?

Gene

I think it’s easy enough to guess. We don’t sound alike at all. If that’s not enough though, I’ll primarily be using this font and Harper will use hers. Any joint statement or prose will be a third font. Also, she’s a brunet. I’m a ginger. Use your eyes.

Harper

Gene’s stuff will have an assload of spelling and grammar errors, and mine won’t. It’s quite easy.

Gene

That too.

Why are there two of you?

Gene

I don’t know, why do you have two kidneys? Two ears, two hands and two eyes? The richness of this story is only possible when we work together. I’ve found trying to work without Harper leaves the already daunting process of ‘writing a novel’ seem impossible. I’m not good at keeping myself engaged without external motivation and Harper is said external motivation. Beyond just my own chemical imbalances, she covers all of my blind spots and I hers. Traditionally, I’d assumed writing had to be alone; merely collaborative on the back end by means of editing and beta-readers while conception— the vile gestation period where pen must be put to paper like needle to vein for a blood draw— was a lonesome affair. That isn’t true, obviously, but even if it was I’ve never gotten more joy out of writing then I do with her by my side. This wouldn’t be worth it without her here (ignore the fact it just, quite simply, wouldn’t get done…). Rest assured, it’s a symbiotic relationship though. Actually, no parasitic. Poisonous. We also have a suicide pact. It’s in legalese though, I won’t bore you with the details. Just trust me.

Harper

Suicide pact. Toxic fake yuri co-dependent relationship. Friendship probably. Actual answer: we cover each other’s blind spots, and this is a project borne primarily of a desire to, ultimately and along the way, have fun. (And the friendship.) We have an intersection of interests and abilities that compliment each other (character analysis, robust and moving storylines, plots and motivations that make SENSE when examined closely) but often go about these in different ways or from different angles to arrive at a (usually) similar end goal. Things that Gene finds tedious I find interesting and vice versa: in this way, our writing is stronger by having more bases covered. We can run things by each other for feedback, approval, veto, compromise, or uprooting whole chunks of things just so we can each have our cake and eat it too. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to click with a person like this to speak candidly about book-related issues or proposals, and have them answer with thoughtful and reasonable points I’d not have considered within my own bubble. It pushes me to think outside my own box. It’s a form of “debating” that isn’t arguing, which is intellectually stimulating and serves to help strengthen both our narrative and friendship.

How did you meet?

Gene

Ao3. Where else do writers meet?

Harper

Yop. You are unlikely to prize our Ao3 accs from our cold dead hands, I’m sure someone could snoop and connect some dots if they reallyyyy tried… I recommend touching grass instead though.

How long is the book?

Gene

Hard to say. It isn’t even ‘short’ yet.

Harper

I want it to be 100,000,000,000 words. Gene keeps telling me we can’t do that and she’ll fall asleep if I prattle on that long about trees and the weather and shit. She’s right. Either way: we have no idea lmao

When will it be done?

Gene

In a perfect world? Next week. In the real world? No idea. Right now all we’re concerned about is the first draft. We’re striving to finish that by December.

Harper

That feels unlikely, but hey, we’ll see what we have scraped together in a few month’s time.

Do you want to publish it?

Gene

Yes. Very badly. It’s too early to speak to what sort of publishing we’d want to do, but ideally a traditional publishing model would be… everything. We aren’t entirely against self publishing either, if there’s a real audience for it. I don’t really worry myself with that right now, it’s not even written. Not even half written… or a quarter…

Harper

Yes! I have no knowledge in that arena though, and thus can’t make an informed decision (or hold an opinion either, really), about which would be “best” for us to do. At the end of the day I want it printed and physically in hands/purchase-able in bookstores. That’s about all I got.

How many books are there?

Gene

Currently, we have one in production, that’s the main story, Project Birthright, and two others loosely outlined on the shelf for now. Those two consist of a prequel set 5 years before the events of Project Birthright, serving as both Cairos’ backstory as well as the love-story between himself and Adoration, and a sequel book that takes place directly after the events of Project Birthright, circa 6–12 months post book. It’s about… well, I guess I can’t tell you that yet. But it’s great. We’re only actively writing Project Birthright as of right now though. Between you and me, we have enough ‘ideas’ to fill a small bookshelf. Harper is uninterested in writing more though, she doesn’t love them as I do. This we all know to be true.

Harper

[She’s standing on my throat again]

How long have you been working on this?

Gene

Without getting into the nitty gritty, in the spring of 2025 Harper had said, delirious after being awake for about 12 hours, “imagine if we made a book [about our ocs]?”, or something, and I — also delirious from lack of sleep — responded “we can”, or something, and… well… at this point, it’s all one game of ‘gay chicken’ that neither of us have tapped out of yet. Starting to worry we never will… anyway… As of writing this, the book has been in production for about 8 months. In these 8 months we’ve come up with the initial idea, gone through at least 8 different outline drafts, shuffled characters and motivations and ideas until finally getting an outline we felt strongly about in December of 2025. It isn’t all complete of course, but… we’re working very fast. We’d be faster, if it wasn’t for the trivial distractions of ‘being a functional adult’ and ‘getting an education’. Yucky.

Harper

Yeah. Bit less than a year. When we first came up with the idea to do this at all, it was said as a joke in a hotel room: “haha, wouldn’t it be funny if we took these characters and made a book? That’d be so crazy.” And we laughed, and the laugh petered out. And we looked at each other and did the “haha… unless…?” thing. And neither of us chickened out. Then we progressively became less hinged as the months wore on and we really dove into this project.

Is this your full time job?

Gene

No. We’re both currently in school for Stenography. Something has to pay the bills as we pick at this…

Harper

God I wish. Unfortunately, being deserving of a stay in a mental hospital due to how normal we aren’t about this world and story of ours doesn’t pay the bills. It’d be awesome if Birthright does pay any sort of bills in the future, I sure wouldn’t say no to that, but we entered into this not expecting to make a dime; that wasn’t even a consideration much less any sort of driving goal.

Is fan-content okay?

Gene

Of course. But only if you send it to projectbirthright2@gmail.com. This isn’t yielding us any money — yet — so I don’t feel bad saying I have no tolerance for anything too beyond the pale (incest, explicit torture porn, generally anything obviously insulting). We will see everything you make, after all.

Harper

Probably I will kiss you full on the mouth if you send us fan content. Beyond the email, tagging us on any of our socials is also an acceptable way to show off your stuff of our stuff! Permission to make this-or-that not needed, it’s not a transaction, I’ll just echo what Gene said above: if you send some sort of foot fetish torture ugly thing, it’s… it’s gonna get the side eye from us both. Read the room etc.

What does supporting you do?

Gene

If nothing else it makes us happy. Happy writers, write more. So if you want more writing, support us. That can be through financial means, with our ko-fi, or fan content of our story and characters, or just through kind messages sent to our email or ask box. It’s all deeply appreciated.

Harper

Money is all well and good, but to us both, true support is engagement. Talk to us! We’re not so busy or indifferent that we’d ignore fan asks or submissions, tags, pings, etc etc. “What if my question is cringe” it might be. Ask it anyway. “What if they beat me with hammers” I only do that to Gene, don’t worry. “What if all I have to say is ‘thank you’ or ‘this looks neat’?” Then say that so I can come to your house and put you in the bug box and feed you delicious leaves. Nothing kills worse than silence; not even simplicity.

How often will you update this website?

Gene

Any time we get art, by submission or commission, we’ll post it here. Beyond that we may update profiles and random blurbs around the site as needed, though that doesn’t warrant a blog post. Official updates will come with each major development we feel is worth sharing with you all. If we get enough financial support to actually be considered ‘making a profit’ we’ll strive to make a consistent posting schedule. But until then… follow our RSS feed so you never miss an update.

Wait, I have another question! Where do I ask it?

Gene

Feel free to drop anything in our guest book or email us directly! We’d be honored to interact with you. Talking about this story and these characters is like medication. You wouldn’t deprive a girl of her meds would you? Have a heart.
